“Life without industry is guilt. Industry without art is brutality.”

– John Ruskin, social commentator, 1819-1900

A regular offering through the Marion Arts Festival is our “Arts in Education Initiative,” a program through which the festival facilitates guest artists in the classroom, working with – and inspiring – students at all grade levels.

During the 2004-05 school year, art teachers throughout the Marion Independent and Linn-Mar school districts have chosen to introduce their students to intensive folk art education. Professionals working in the traditional arts, from both the nearby Amana Colonies and around Eastern Iowa, have been demonstrating their skills, teaching their history, and working their magic to interest students in folk art means and ways.

Students will create and stitch quilts, weave baskets from a variety of materials indigenous to Eastern Iowa, and learn to smith metal as part of their folk art education under the instruction of their classroom guest artists. Then, on festival day, they will exhibit their work to 10,000 admiring festival attendees. Also planned for the festival event is a demonstration by working folk artists, as part of our partnership with the Amana Arts Guild.

Sponsoring this year’s “Arts in Education Initiative” is Lifetouch National School Studio. Students, teachers, parents, and the community appreciate their generosity toward the facilitation of this program.
